DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis men's basketball team (14-5, 12-0 RMAC) is hitting the road for the first time in three weeks for a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road games at Adams State University (14-7, 8-5 RMAC) and New Mexico Highlands University (9-15, 7-6 RMAC) on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Keep Up the Pressure
The Skyhawks have stuck to their high-pressure defense all season, and last week, it paid dividends at home. On Thursday, its signature style built a strong second-half lead that proved the difference maker in a 78-70 win over a balanced and disciplined Colorado School of Mines (11-12, 7-5 RMAC) team. However, Saturday afternoon's game was arguably what second-year head coach Jordan Mast has searched for all season, with the Skyhawks erupting for 23 steals and 43 points off 33 forced turnovers to blow by Metropolitan State University of Denver (7-13, 5-7 RMAC), 101-72, for FLC's largest point differential of the season. Currently, Fort Lewis ranks eighth in Division II, forcing 18.53 turnovers per game, and sixth with 12.0 steals per game.

National Spotlight
Yesterday, Fort Lewis made its first appearance in the national spotlight this year, earning its first votes on the National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 poll. The Skyhawks were one of eight programs from the loaded South-Central region to appear on the poll, and received votes for the first time since the preseason poll ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. Fort Lewis currently stands alone atop the RMAC with a perfect 12-0 record: the program's best-ever start to conference play. Overall, the Skyhawks five losses this season have come against teams that were ranked at the time of competition, or are currently ranked or receiving votes.

Cowboy Country
Despite the road loss at Adams State last night, New Mexico Highlands has otherwise been a strong program in recent weeks, boasting a 3-1 record in its last four home games since Jan. 22. Overall, the Cowboys play best at home, where they hold a 6-4 record inside the John A. Wilson Complex. Most recently, NMHU bested Regis University (1-17, 0-12 RMAC), 98-51.

The Cowboys gave the Skyhawks a run for their money in Durango, falling to the RMAC leaders by a narrow 88-80 margin back on Dec. 9. Dontae Walker had a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds to lead NMHU to an efficient 49.1 percent shooting mark from the field. However, New Mexico Highlands converted on just 25 free throws in 38 percent (65.8 percent), which proved the difference maker against Fort Lewis' 25-of-29 (86.2 percent) night at the charity stripe.
