ALAMOSA, Colo. – Three players scored in double figures for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team in a 91-68 loss to Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play Thursday night.
The loss drops the Skyhawks to 13-8 overall and 6-7 in conference play, while the Grizzlies improve to 19-5 overall and 13-1 in the RMAC.
Fort Lewis shot 34.1 percent from the field, 9.1 percent from three, and 50 percent from the free throw line. Adams State shot 58.7 percent from the field, made four three-pointers, and shot 54.2 percent from the stripe. Fort Lewis held a slight 42-40 rebounding advantage and forced 23 turnovers.
Freshman Josie Davis led the Skyhawks with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Junior Makaya Porter also scored 13 points, while freshman Savanna Dotray added 11.
Davis opened the scoring for Fort Lewis with a layup 30 seconds into the game, but Adams State answered with a run to take a 9-2 lead. Davis scored again to slow the momentum, but the Grizzlies responded with another surge to extend the lead to 17-8 midway through the quarter. Guanella pushed the Skyhawks into double figures with two free throws, and baskets on both ends made it 23-12 with 3:12 remaining. Dotray's hook shot in the final minute cut the deficit to 28-18 heading into the second quarter.
Fort Lewis trimmed the deficit to nine early in the second and pulled closer when Palacio Gámez knocked down a three at the six-minute mark. Adams State responded with a 12-2 run to build a 44-26 lead and carried a 46-30 advantage into halftime. The Grizzlies shot 60 percent in the first half, while Fort Lewis shot 29.5 percent.
Adams State maintained its offensive pace in the third quarter, opening with four points before Porter answered with a layup. Martinez followed with a step-back jumper, and Davis added two free throws to make it 53-37. A three-pointer from Lamb and three Adams State field goals pushed the lead to 19. Fort Lewis reached the free throw line but struggled to convert, and the score moved to 65-44 with 1:51 remaining. Adams State closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to lead 73-45.
Davis reached 13 points at the 9:11 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 73-47. Sarah Chick scored on a layup at 6:53, and Porter added two layups to cut the deficit to 80-55 with under five minutes remaining. Dotray scored on back-to-back jumpers during the next three minutes, giving her 11 points as the Grizzlies led 84-61. Chick added two points and three rebounds in the final two minutes as Adams State secured the 91-68 win.
