Overtime comeback falls short in 93-88 loss to New Mexico Highlands

Skyhawks drop back-to-back games for first time since November

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team fought through 11 ties and 16 lead changes and saw five Skyhawks reach double figures, but could not pull ahead in the overtime period, ultimately falling to New Mexico Highlands University 93-88 at a rowdy John A. Wilson Complex.
 
The Skyhawks (14-7, 12-2 RMAC) shot an efficient 43.4 percent (33-76) from the floor and saw a season-high 37-point output from its bench. New Mexico Highlands (10-15, 8-6 RMAC), however, was an even more efficient 45.7 percent (32-7) from the field to edge Fort Lewis 54-48 on points in the paint, 34 fastbreak points. The Cowboys also converted when it mattered most, shooting 88.9 percent (24-27) at the free-throw line compared to the Skyhawks' 66.7 percent (16-24)
 
Fort Lewis grabbed 13 steals on 24 forced turnovers, but capitalized on only 24 points off turnovers. New Mexico Highlands had 15 steals, forced 19 turnovers, scored 22 points off turnovers, and won off the glass, outrebounding the Skyhawks 46-41. Senior guard Ramiah Adedigba went off for a career-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting while knocking down two three-pointers, going 4-for-4 at the line, and totaling three rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Dontae Walker added a dominant 17-point, 11-rebound double-double, with BJ Comer and Ibrahima Sacko pouring in another 15 points and 12 points, respectively.
 
Stewart Erhart led five Skyhawks in double figures, scoring 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting with six boards, five assists, three steals, and a block. Chuol Deng finished just shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Keither Florence scored 14 points, Donald Bangham, Jr. scored 11 points, and Garrett Barger scored a career-high 10 points in his first double-digit scoring effort.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis still leads New Mexico Highlands 66-44 all-time. Both teams have exchanged wins in each of the last four contests.
-The Skyhawks lose back-to-back games for the first time since Nov. 28-29.
-FLC shot under 70 percent at the free-throw line for the 11th time this year.
-Stewart Erhart maintained his streak of scoring in double figures in 17 consecutive games. Erhart also played a career-high 41 minutes.
-Garrett Barger scored in double figures for the first time in his young career, racking up 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting with four rebounds and two assists.

Fort Lewis will continue living on the road next week, this time with a trip up the Western Slope to Colorado Mesa University (15-7, 11-3 RMAC) on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m., and Western Colorado University (7-15, 5-9 RMAC) on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m.
