SMSU Spring Invitational awaits Skyhawks women’s golf

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis women's golf team is hitting the fairways for the second time this spring as the Skyhawks return to action with the Southwest Minnesota State University Spring Invitational this Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 9-10, at Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
 
Fort Lewis will compete with 12 other schools, including Adams State University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, Concordia University St. Paul, Southwest Minnesota State, Western New Mexico University, Minot State University, University of Minnesota, Crookston, Colorado Mesa University, Chadron State College, Mesa Community College, Bemidji State University, and the University of Lethbridge.
 
The Wigwam Red Course, built in 1972, features a traditional layout that spans up to 6,852 yards with a par of 72, a rating of 72.0, and a slope of 125. All seven Skyhawks will make the trip, with Peyton Gibby, Annika Gutierrez, Dimery Plewe, Isabel Bustillos, and Kathryn Moores making up FLC's team while Sarah Grenemyer and Ellie White compete as individuals. It will be Gutierrez and Grenemyer's first outing of the spring.
 
The Skyhawks last competed at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout (Feb. 23-24) over at Corica Park Golf Course in Alameda, Calif., where Fort Lewis took a tie for 18th on a combined team score of 639 (+63) after two rounds. Gibby led all Skyhawks with a T-56 finish, shooting a 12-over-par 156. Plewe, Moores, and Bustillos trailed one another in succession by a single stroke with Plewe taking T-71 on a 161 (+17), Moores T-74 on a 162 (+18), and Bustillos T-79 on a 163 (+19). White followed up the crew in 99th on a 175 (+31).
 
Looking Ahead
Next week, Fort Lewis will head for The Quail Golf Club out on the coast in Carmel, Calif., for the Patriot Invitational on March. 16-17, hosted by No. 2 nationally ranked Dallas Baptist University.
