Schmitten named RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis College football kicker Lucas Schmitten has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Special Teams Player of the Week for week two, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Schmitten, a junior out of ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., grabs his first career weekly honor after remaining perfect to begin the season last Saturday night, Sept. 12, as he went 2-for-2 on point-after attempts while also converting on field goals from 23, 42, and 37 yards to cement Fort Lewis' 31-28 win in overtime over New Mexico Highlands University (2-1, 0-1 RMAC), handing the Cowboys their first loss of the season while also lifting the Skyhawks to the program's first 2-0 start to a season since 1979.

Fort Lewis fought through six lead changes in the contest, ultimately sitting at 28-28 at the end of regulation. Following a missed field goal try from New Mexico Highlands, also from 37 yards out, the Skyhawks offense steadily ran the ball until fourth down, when, despite the Cowboys calling their final timeout to 'ice' Schmitten, he stepped up and delivered the game-winner through the uprights for Fort Lewis' first 1-0 start to RMAC play since 2019.

This season, Schmitten is a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts and 5-for-5 on point-after attempts. He is one of three kickers in the conference to remain perfect through five or more attempts, and his 51-yard field goal against Arizona Christian (Sept. 5) remains the longest by an RMAC kicker thus far and is tied for the sixth-longest in Division II.

Fort Lewis will make its first conference road trip this Saturday, Sept. 19, as the Skyhawks challenge Colorado School of Mines (0-2-1, 0-1 RMAC) on Alumni Field at Marv Kay Stadium at 12 p.m.
