Orediggers upend Skyhawks in first RMAC setback

Fort Lewis suffers first loss of 2026

GOLDEN, Colo. – Fort Lewis College football (2-1, 1-1 RMAC), unable to move the chains or slow down the Orediggers, and despite winning the turnover battle, suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field at Marv Kay Stadium as Colorado School of Mines ran away from the Skyhawks, 34-3, in front of a rowdy crowd of 3,115.
 
The Skyhawks mustered 188 yards of total offense thanks to 126 yards passing on 19 completions in 34 attempts (55.9 percent) from Sam Jones and another 81 yards on 8-of-15 passing (53.3 percent) from Hayes Dwyer. Baylor Seabolt, Jacob Brown, and Kyler Drunkasky combined for eight rushing yards on ten carries, but Colorado School of Mines controlled the backfield with five sacks for a combined 42 yards lost, resulting in -27 yards rushing for FLC. Fort Lewis also converted on just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) of third-downs.
 
Mines ran up 530 yards of offense, 312 yards passing and 218 yards rushing, behind a near-perfect outing from quarterback Joseph Capra, who connected on 16-of-22 attempts for 267 yards and three touchdowns, and linked up with Aksel Richard, Jake Willis, and Tyson Mauck for touchdowns from 65, 27, and six yards each, respectively. Capra added another 55 yards rushing on eight carries despite a five-yard sack from Kingston Grigsby and a two-yard sack from Walter Stauffer. Braelon Tate supplied another 86 yards on 15 attempts.
 
Lucas Schmitten provided Fort Lewis' lone points in the contest, converting a 44-yard field goal in the final minutes of the fourth quarter after his first career miss on a 48-yard attempt early in the first quarter. Preston Kyle knocked in field goals from 45 and 37 yards, and went 2-for-2 on point-after attempts alongside Jack Manthey. Lucas LeSieur punted just thrice from CSM, with all three boots eclipsing 50+ yards and landing inside-the-20.
 
Elijah Portela led the Skyhawks defense, recording a game-high 10 tackles by way of six solo and four assisted tackles, while also forcing one of two Orediggers fumbles; the second of his career. Khalil Ali forced his third career fumble. MJ Dailey and Drennan Dowell each recovered a fumble. Dowell continued his production with nine tackles. Miles Cox and Cooper Payne each hauled in their first interceptions off third-string quarterback Alex Birch.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis suffered its first loss of 2026 and fell to 2-1 overall and 1-1 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents.
-Colorado School of Mines extended its lead to 37-27 all-time and 19-13 in Golden, Colo.
-FLC won the turnover battle, 4-3. Both sides had two interceptions each, while the Skyhawks forced and recovered two fumbles to the Orediggers one.
-Fort Lewis was 3-of-17 on third down, 1-of-3 on fourth down, and held possession for just 23:59.
-Sam Jones made his second appearance since playing in five games in 2024 and set career highs in passing yards (126), completions (19), attempts (34), and completion percentage (55.9%).
-Hayes Dwyer made his collegiate debut, throwing for 81 yards on 8-of-15 (53.3%) passing while scrambling for -5 yards and taking two sacks.
-Elijah Portela and Khalil Ali forced their second and third career fumbles, respectively. Portela led all players with 10 tackles.
-Drennan Dowell recovered his second career fumble this season, and MJ Dailey V picked up his first career fumble.
-Miles Cox and Cooper Payne made their first career interceptions.

Fort Lewis is back on the road next Saturday, Sept. 26, in Spearfish, S.D., to face Black Hills State University (3-1, 1-1 RMAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lyle Hare Stadium. The Yellow Jackets, who received votes on last week's American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, fell 44-36 to New Mexico Highlands University (3-1, 1-1 RMAC) today in Las Vegas, N.M.
