Fourth-quarter comeback falls short; (RV) Yellow Jackets elude Skyhawks

Jones posts first 30-completion performance since 2012

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Fifth-year quarterback Sam Jones threw for a career-high 339 yards and two touchdowns, and Fort Lewis football eclipsed 400 yards of offense for the first time in two years, but the Skyhawks could not secure the final possession, ultimately coming up short 28-20 on the road at Black Hills State University at a packed Lyle Hare Stadium.
 
Jones completed 30 passes in 40 attempts (75 percent) with a quarterback rating of 162.7, notching Fort Lewis' first 300-yard passing effort since 2018 and first 30-completion performance since 2012 as the Skyhawks fell to an even 2-2 overall and 1-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Black Hills State, who received votes on back-to-back American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches' polls, improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action behind a 192-yard, three-touch rushing effort, led by quarterback Kade Weber, who scampered for 97 yards and two scores while throwing for another 139 yards on 12-for-24 (50 percent) passing.
 
The Fort Lewis defense held the opposition below 200 yards rushing for the first time this year and won the turnover battle 2-to-1, thanks to a forced fumble from Jordan Thomas and two recoveries by Ellis Watson and Dillan Swift. Walter Stauffer posted 1.5 of the Skyhawks' three total sacks for six yards with seven tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss overall. Drennan Dowell spearheaded the defense, matching BHSU's Caden Stansbury for a game-high 10 tackles and the second double-digit tackle effort of his career.
 
Lucas Schmitten drove through a 41-yard field goal on the first possession of the game, but would finish the afternoon 2-for-4 on field goal attempts with a 23-yarder late in the fourth quarter and a pair of misses from 46 and 53 yards. Schmitten was 2-for-2 on point-after attempts, following a 10-yard receiving touchdown from Michael Collins and a 78-yard catch-and-run score from Solomon Latimer, securing his second 100-yard receiving game of the year. Baylor Seabolt found his rhythm out of the backfield, rushing for 63 yards and 7.9 per carry on eight attempts.

Fort Lewis outgained Black Hills State 405 yards to 372 overall and held possession for 32:10, but converted on just 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) third downs and went 1-for-2 on fourth down. BHSU was 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) on third down and 1-of-3 on fourth down thanks to a trick play and direct snap to Wyatt Tremly, who ran for a 43-yard touchdown.

-Fort Lewis suffered its seventh-straight loss to Black Hills State.
-FLC trails BHSU 11-3 all-time and 6-1 in Spearfish, S.D.
-The Skyhawks' 402 yards of offense mark the first 400+ yard performance since 499 yards of offense against New Mexico Highlands University on Nov. 9, 2024. 
-Sam Jones posted Fort Lewis' first 30-completion game since Tim Jenkins made 32 completions at Colorado State University Pueblo back on Sept. 29, 2012, and threw for 300+ yards for the first time since Jake Lowry posted 324 yards against New Mexico Highlands on Aug. 31, 2018.
-Sam Jones and Solomon Latimer's 78-yard touchdown connection ties the second-longest receiving touchdown in the RMAC thus far.
-Solomon Latimer leads all Skyhawks with four touchdowns and 329 yards on 20 catches.
-Michael Collins picked up his second touchdown of the year and fifth overall of his career.
-Kamrin Joyce-Fairley set a pair of career highs with 79 receiving yards and 58 kick return yards.
-Drennan Dowell posted his second 10-tackle effort this year and has made no fewer than eight tackles in any game thus far.
-Jordan Thomas forced the second fumble of his career, while Dillan Swift and Ellis Watson recovered their first career fumbles. 
-Lucas Schmitten went 2-for-4 on field goal attempts and 2-for-2 on point-after attempts, bringing his season totals to 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) on field goals and 7-for-7 on point-after attempts.
-Jonathan Stewart tied his career-high with eight tackles.

The Hardrockers defeated New Mexico Highlands University (3-2, 1-2 RMAC), 34-23, at home in Rapid City, S.D., earlier this afternoon.
