October 24, 2009. Durango, CO – The Fort Lewis Men's soccer team got everything that they expected against Metro State Friday afternoon, a very physical game. There were six yellow cards and one red card handed out in the match; four yellows and a red went to Metro State while Fort Lewis was given two yellow cards. In the end, the Skyhawks kept their composure against the scrappy Roadrunners and proved why they are the #4 team in the nation beating them 1-0 keeping them undefeated in the RMAC (14-1-0 overall, 11-0-0 RMAC).
Twenty five minutes into the first half, junior midfielder Keane Hamilton went up for a 50/50 ball and was undercut landing awkward on his shoulder and face leaving him motionless on the halfway line. Hamilton was able to walk off the pitch with some help and was taken to the hospital by ambulance with a broken collarbone and nose at halftime.
The Skyhawks tried to overcome the loss of their starting center midfielder, but were unable to produce anything which left them going into halftime 0-0. Fort Lewis only outshot the Roadrunners 5-4 in the first half while FLC goalkeeper Zane Wells had to make 2 saves in the half as the MSCD keeper made 3. Each team committed 5 fouls in the half.
In the second half, Metro State continued to play dirty committing 13 fouls to Fort Lewis's 4 as the Skyhwaks played the way the game is supposed to be played and earned themselves the only goal on the day. In the 59th minute there was a scramble in the box after senior Tom Settle's shot and right as one of the MSCD defenders was about to clear it fellow senior David Barden slid in and kept it alive. The ball then bounced to Euan Purcell who's back was to the goal forcing him to do a semi-bicycle kick over his head sending the ball through a defenders legs and into the back of the net.
Purcell's game winner was his 17th goal on the season making him the leading scorer in the RMAC. Wells is also leading the RMAC with eight shutouts. Settle led the Skyhawks with 5 shots while Barden and Purcell each tallied 2 in the match.
The Skyhawks will be hosting Regis University Sunday afternoon on Dirks Field at 1:00pm. The game will be the Hawks' last regular season home game as they will recognize their 6 seniors for Senior Day.
