Men's Basketball Goes 2-0 in the NMHU Thanksgiving Classic

Lansdowne Scores 29 points in win over Jarvis Christian
November 29, 2009. (Story written by Durango Herald Sports Staff) - One night after overcoming a halftime deficit to win on freshman Bryse Velasquez's overtime, buzzer-beating 3-pointer, Fort Lewis College could have breathed a little easier with a 41-32 halftime lead over Jarvis Christian College of Hawkins, Texas, on Saturday night.

The Skyhawks didn't though.

The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team ratcheted up its offensive play still further in a second half that saw the Skyhawks outscore their opponents 53-27 in front of a Las Vegas, N.M., crowd.

“Our offense played extremely well in the second half," FLC head coach Bob Hofman said.

Junior Preseason RMAC Player of the Year DeAndre Lansdowne scored 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting, sinking all 11 free throws, grabbing five rebounds, dishing four assists and collecting four steals to lead the Skyhawks to a perfect 5-0 record.

The Skyhawks shot 48 percent from the field - an even 15-for-31 in both halves - and forced 18 turnovers while conceding just 10.

Sophomore Kit Hensel added 10 points in just 18 minutes, while freshman forward Torrey Udall scored nine and pulled in 11 rebounds for the Skyhawks.

“All of our young guys performed well," Hofman said. All 12 FLC players logged double-figure minutes.

Does Hofman think this year's team, the first in recent memory to start 5-0, is better than last year's more seasoned unit?

“I think we're a pretty good inside-outside team," Hofman said.

“We're potentially a better defensive team this year, and we've got good depth."

FLC will travel to Denver next weekend for its first in-conference games at Metro State (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Regis (Saturday at 5 p.m.) heraldsports@durangoherald.com
