Women's Basketball Defeats Dixie State for Second Time This Season

Rosel Leads the Skyhawks with 23 points in win
November 29, 2009.  (Story Written by Durango Herald Sports Staff) - Add another road win for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team.

The Skyhawks, ranked No. 5 in the nation, defeated Dixie State College 84-74 on Saturday afternoon in St. George - FLC's second win over the Red Storm in eight days.

“It was a dog fight all the way," FLC head coach Mark Kellogg said. “It was really a battle in the second half."

He said the Skyhawks got an early lead against the full-court pressing Red Storm.

“But we couldn't quite put them away," Kellogg said after the Skyhawks improved to 8-0. They defeated the Academy of Art from San Francisco 78-54 on Friday in St. George.

“(Saturday) was a game where the four senior starters and Abby (Jackson) came through," Kellogg said.

Senior Allison Rosel led all scorers with 23 points.

Senior Audrey George, the MVP of the Skyhawk Classic in Durango last weekend, had 17 points and nine rebounds.

“Audrey, like usual, was all over the place," Kellogg said.

Seniors Katie Mackey and Laura Haugen added 11 and 12 points, respectively. Mackey also collected six rebounds.

Jackson, a junior, added eight points.

“And she only had two turnovers against their full-court pressure," Kellogg said.

Johnna Brown led Dixie State with 19 points. Amber Scruggs added 15 points for the Red Storm, 2-2.

Fort Lewis shot a blistering 55 percent from the field while holding Dixie State to 36 percent.

“Dixie is a good team. They will win a lot of games in their conference," Kellogg said.

“This was an RMAC-type road game. This will help us at Metro (State) and Regis next weekend," the FLC head coach said.
