December 12, 2009. Durango, CO. - There was nothing the Eagles of Chadron State could have done last night to stop the fast pace, high pressure game of the #7 Skyhawks. Fort Lewis pounded Chadron State last night in an RMAC game 84-35. Chadron State fell to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC while the Skyhawks improved to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC.
The Eagles came out in the first few minutes and hung with the Hawks', pressuring them and forcing them to work for a good shot. It was only a matter of time before the Skyhawks got into their rhythm and went on a 10-0 run in only 84 seconds with baskets from Allison Rosel, Katie Mackey and fellow senior Audrey George
“We really stepped up defensively," Mackey said, crediting the Skyhawks' pressure. “A lot of us have played together for three years, and we can play that (kind of) defense." The defense Mackey was talking about held the Eagles to 10 points in the first half (32-10) on 4 of 23 shooting (17%). Fort Lewis shot 40% from the field and ended the first half with a 23-4 run and were led by Rosel who went into the break with 11 points, followed by George with 9 points and five rebounds.
The Skyhawks weren't done with the Eagles yet. It only took a few minutes, a 3-pointer by Abby Jackson, an acrobatic layup by Mackey and trey from Mackey and the Skyhawks were up by 40 then 50. With the Hawks' reserves they were able to maintain the high level of play and keep a 40-50 point lead the remainder of the half.
It was a complete team victory. Every player for the Skyhawks scored, even soccer standout, Hayley Hollenga who has just had a week or two of practice. “Our younger players (Friday night), I thought they were fantastic," Kellogg said. Fort Lewis shot an impressive 49% from the field and 73% from the charity stripe.
The Skyhawks were able to set a record in FLC Women's Basketball history, recording an impressive 27 steals in the game.
Mackey led the Hawks' in scoring with 15 points, 2 assists and 5 steals in only 17 minutes. Rosel went 6-9 from the field and 14 points, George added in 12 points, Jackson chipped in 9 points on 3-3 from beyond the arc and Jenna Santistevan came off the bench with 8 points and 4 rebounds.
The Skyhawks will take on the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney (2-5 overall, 2-1 RMAC) who defeated Adams State last night 63-56. The game is set to tip-off at 6pm.
