The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team unwrapped an early Christmas present Tuesday afternoon in Española, N.M.
The Skyhawks, ranked No. 7 in this week's NCAA Division II women's poll, overwhelmed winless Northern New Mexico College 111-18 to log one of the biggest margins of victory in Fort Lewis College history.
“It was pretty ugly," FLC head coach Mark Kellogg said. “We were up 66-5 at the half. We had six players in double figures."
Northern New Mexico fell to 0-13 with the loss.
He said the Skyhawks had an opportunity to try out several new defenses and some new offensive looks in the blowout game.
“Everybody played; everybody scored," Kellogg said. “Now we're ready for a little break. Twelve and one is a pretty good start."
Senior Allison Rosel led the parade of double-digit scorers Tuesday. She had a game-high 14 points.
Sophomore Stephanie Beeman added 13 points.
Senior Katie Mackey added 12 for Fort Lewis.
Three other Skyhawks - Audrey George, Dana Schreibvogel and Lauren McCullough - scored 10 points each.
The Fort Lewis women's team, 12-1 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, will return to action Jan. 2 with a nonconference game against Eastern New Mexico at Portales (2 p.m.).
The Skyhawks will travel to Canyon, Texas, on Jan. 3 for a big game against West Texas A&M, ranked No. 16 nationally this week. That game will start at 1 p.m. MST.
