Shisler, Striedel power No. 8 Fort Lewis to 6-0 women's soccer victory

Skyhawks hammer New Mexico Highlands with 14 shots on goal

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. – Erika Shisler and Megan Striedel each scored two goals as No. 8 Fort Lewis College women's soccer team blistered New Mexico Highlands University 6-0 today at Dirks Field.

The Skyhawks (9-1-0 overall, 4-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) peppered the Cowgirls (4-4-1, 2-2-1) with 20 shots, including 14 on goal, and played the last 69:30 a player up as Highlands had Julissa Rodriguez red-carded at 19:30.

Shisler started the scoring at 12:48 when she unleashed a blast from 15 yards out on the right side past NMHU starting goalkeeper Amanda Rose Johnson on an assist by Sara Egbom.

Johnson made several key saves in the next 20 minutes to hold the Skyhawks at bay, including a diving save on Shisler in the 40th minute, but Torrey Larson was on the doorstep to tap in the rebound at 39:19 to put FLC ahead 2-0 — the score that the two teams would take into halftime.

Fort Lewis stretched the lead in the first 21 minutes of the second half on goals by Hayley Hollenga — her team-leading sixth of the season — at 54:10 and by Shisler at 65:06. Elena Benavides assisted both markers.

The game was delayed for more than a half-hour with just over 19 minutes showing on the game clock due to lightning.

Following the delay, the Skyhawks picked up right where they left off, with Striedel scoring her second and third goals of the season within a 6:16 span. Her first, at 76:47, was set up by Kortney Hull. The second, at 83:03, was assisted by Roxanne Baldwin.

All four second half goals were scored against reserve NMHU goalkeeper Shannon Delarosbil, who relieved Johnson at intermission. The two keepers combined for eight saves, with Johnson making six in the first half.

Skyhawk goalkeeper Christine Schmelzle stopped all three shots on goal that she faced.

Fort Lewis returns to the Dirks Field pitch at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 8 when it hosts Colorado Mines (5-5-2 overall, 4-1-0 RMAC). The game is a rematch of last season's second round NCAA Division II playoff game, which saw the Orediggers upset FLC 2-1 at Dirks Field.
