DURANGO, Colo. — Nicole Schumacher floated a long shot just underneath the crossbar at 56:00 to lead No. 7 Fort Lewis College (11-1-0 overall, 7-1-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 1-0 women's soccer win over No. 11 Metropolitan State College (9-2-1, 7-1-0) today at Dirks Fied.
Schumacher corralled a pass from
Erika Shisler and lofted a shot from 20 yards away just over the hands of Roadrunner goalkeeper Alee Seehausen, under the crossbar, and inside the right post.
"She just took a chance," fourth-year head coach
Damian Clarke said of Schumacher, who tallied her first goal of the season. "You're not going to win games if you don't have people taking chances. She took a chance and she caught the goalkeeper."
The Skyhawks dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Roadrunners 7-1 overall and 4-1 in shots on goal.
The play leveled out in the second half, though, with Metro State's Ashley Nemmers getting a pair of quality chances - one that was fired directly at FLC goalkeeper
Christine Schmlezle, and another that clanged off the crossbar. The Skyhawks regained composure down the stretch.
"After we scored the goal and then in the last six or seven minutes of the game, we showed a lot of class by keeping the ball and forcing them to chase us," said Clarke, who attributed the victory to his team's attitude. "We've been saying it over and over again that performance is going to follow mindset. They've got a mindset to perform and do what it takes to win games. You don't have to win pretty, you just have to win."
Schmelzle finished the game with four saves while recording her seventh shutout of the season.
Seehausen made five saves for the Roadrunners.
The Skyhawks conclude a six-game homestand by hosting Mesa State (4-6-2 overall, 2-5-1 RMAC) at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dirks Field. Then they immediately hit the road for a pair of league games in Denver — at Colorado Christian (1-11-1, 1-7-1) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and a rematch at Metro State at noon Sunday.
