DURANGO, Colo. - Erika Shisler,
Megan Striedel and
Hayley Hollenga scored goals as No. 6 Fort Lewis College (12-1-0 overall, 8-1-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated Mesa State (4-7-2, 2-6-1) 3-1 today at Dirks Field.
"I'm very happy with the overall performance," said fourth-year head coach
Damian Clarke. "I thought it was one of the most complete performances from whistle to whistle that we've had this year. I didn't like the mistake with the goal [we allowed], but I thought we did well to play a complete game."
Shisler got the scoring started in 22nd minute when she collected a pass from
Sara Egbom to the right of the goal near the end line and sent a shot into the net just inside the far post at 21:35. It was her third goal of the season and marked the only score of the first half.
A corner kick set up FLC's second goal at 57:36 when Shisler touched a short pass to Hollenga, who fired a crossing pass across the goal onto the head of Striedel, who buried the ball into the back of the net for her fifth tally of the season.
Hollenga scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year when she ran onto a long pass behind the Mesa State defense that was sent in by
Therese Romero. Hollenga chipped the ball over Mavs goalkeeper Alicia Kahler at 61:18 to extend the lead to 3-0.
Mesa State scored its lone goal of the game at 69:37 when Kelci Crispe collected an errant FLC pass some 30 yards away from the net. Crispe's shot managed to elude FLC goalkeeper
Christine Schmelzle and found its way into the goal to cut the lead to 3-1.
Clarke was generally pleased with his team's performance, singling out his central midfielders, in particular. "
Taylor [Tegtmeyer] and Lena [
Elena Benavides], that's the most complete game I've seen them play as midfielders this year," he said.
Fort Lewis outshot the Mavs 27-10 overall, 11-5 in shots on frame.
Kahler made eight saves for Mesa State, while Schmelzle stopped four shots for Fort Lewis.
The Skyhawks travel to Denver this weekend, where they'll play Colorado Christian (1-11-1, 1-7-1) at 3:30 p.m. Friday and No. 11 Metro State (9-2-1, 5-2-1) at noon Sunday.
"It's big," Clarke said of the upcoming road trip. "I don't think the Christian team can be overlooked because they've kept themselves in games all year. The Metro State game is the biggest game of the year again for us."
