DENVER, Colo. — No. 6 Fort Lewis College and No. 11 Metropolitan State College battled to a 1-1 draw in women's soccer action today at Auraria Field.
"It was an evenly played game," said fourth-year FLC head coach
Damian Clarke. "I thought both teams were pretty tired at the end. It was just a battle. Neither team budged an inch. I think we had the better of chances and the run of play.
Megan Striedel centered a pass from the left side that
Sara Egbom ran onto and knocked into the goal with her body at 27:04 to put the Skyhawks (13-1-1 overall, 9-1-1 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) ahead 1-0. The goal was Egbom's fifth of the year and third of the weekend (she had two in a
3-1 win at Colorado Christian on Friday).
Eight minutes later, the Roadrunners (10-3-2, 6-3-2) leveled the score when Becca Medina buried a free kick from the top of the box just inside the goalpost into the side netting at 35:21.
Sarah Tanous stopped six shots in her second career start for the Roadrunners, including three in the second half. FLC goalkeeper
Christine Schmelzle made seven saves.
Schmelzle made an spectacular diving save up and to her left after a blast from Aubrey Fondy from near the top-right corner of the box after a turnover by the Skyhawks led to a breakaway.
FLC missed a shot from inside the box in the first overtime, but that was the only scoring chance for either team. In the second overtime, Schmelzle stopped a header from Nicole Pollack from inside the box after a cross from Fondy. This came moments after a FLC goal was called back for offsides.
With two weeks remaining in the RMAC regular season, the Skyhawks find themselves alone at the top, but with Regis breathing down their necks. Fort Lewis has 28 points and a 9-1-1 record (three points are awarded for a win, one for a tie), while Regis has 27 points and a 9-2-0 slate in league play.
Fort Lewis travels to Adams State (4-9-1, 3-6-1) at 3 p.m. Friday and New Mexico Highlands (9-4-2, 7-2-2) at 1 p.m. Sunday. FLC concludes its regular season on Sunday, October 31 when it hosts Regis (12-4-0, 9-2-0) at 1 p.m. at Dirks Field in what could ultimately determine the RMAC regular season champion.
