DURANGO, Colo. — Dominic Morris and Glen Clinton each rushed for more than 100 yards as Chadron State College (6-3 overall, 5-2 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated Fort Lewis College (2-6, 2-5) 38-7 today at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
“We played well for most of the first half,” said first-year FLC head coach
Cesar Rivas-Sandoval. “But we couldn't stop the run in the second.”
Morris' 64-yard burst with 2:46 remaining in the first half put the Eagles up 17-7 and ultimately swung momentum to Chadron State's side for the remainder of the game. He later added a 74-yard scoring sprint up the east sideline to end scoring with 4:02 remaining in the game. He finished with a game-high 195 yards on just 10 carries.
Clinton was a workhorse for the Eagles, amassing 154 yards on 28 carries. As a team, Chadron State gained 428 yards on the ground on 53 carries, with Alex Rodriguez adding 44 yards on seven carries and John Ritzen gaining 42 yards on three rushes.
Fort Lewis took an early 7-0 lead when
Tim Jenkins found
Deric Davis for a 54-yard catch and run just 2:36 into the game on FLC's second possession after each team went three-and-out.
Late in the first quarter, FLC looked to extend its lead to 14-0, but Jenkins was intercepted by Jed Herblan at the CSC 13. Herblan's 34-yard return set up a 42-yard Michael Ziola field goal to cut the Skyhawk lead to 7-3 early in the second quarter.
After the next Skyhawk drive stalled, Eagles quarterback Jonn McLain led his team on a seven-play, 59-yard drive capped by a 31-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Rose to give the Eagles a 10-7 lead with 6:27 remaining in the first half.
The biggest blow came from CSC's Maverick Churchill and James Bellville, who crushed Jenkins on a second-and-10 from the FLC 28 late in the first half. While Jenkins returned for the third quarter, he was ineffective. Utility back
Justin Peters quarterbacked the Skyhawks on their final first half drive and for the entire fourth quarter.
“We never really recovered from Tim's injury,” said Rivas-Sandoval.
Jenkins finished the game with 155 passing yards, completing 16 of 30 attempts with one touchdown and one interception. Peters was just two-of-five passing for seven yards in relief.
A.J. Miko had a strong game running the ball, gaining 82 yards on 18 carries.
Justin Garman caught six passes for 26 yards and also amassed 47 yards on four punt returns.
Justin Johnson was held to a season-low 36 yards on five catches.
Chadron State outgained the Skyhawks 551 yards to 253.
Eddie Vega led the Skyhawk defense with 10 tackles (eight solo), including two tackles-for-losses for -3 yards.
Ken Lindholm and Kelen Kahrs each had six tackles for the Eagles. While Chadron State recorded no sacks, they had seven quarterback hurries and broke up six FLC passes, several of which were batted down at the line of scrimmage.
Fort Lewis travels to No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney (8-1, 7-0) at 11 a.m. (MST) next Saturday in its final road trip of the season.
