Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. - Hayley Hollenga and Megan Striedel scored goals as No. 7 Fort Lewis College (10-1-0 overall, 6-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated the Colorado School of Mines (5-3-3, 4-2-1) 2-1 in women's soccer action today at Dirks Field.

"We've been telling the girls that the bottom line is, preparation leads to results," said fourth-year head coach Damian Clarke. "We're a tough team. We practice hard day in and day out, which prepares us to finish games. This wasn't our best performance, but the girls found a way to get it done in the end."

Striedel tallied her fourth goal of the season at 22:26 when she corralled a corner kick from Erika Shisler in the box and drilled a shot past CSM goalkeeper Briana Shulze at 22:26 of the first half. The assist was Shisler's team-leading ninth of the year.

"I'm excited for Striedel to score, as I am for Shisler to get another assist," said Clarke.

Hollenga drilled shot into the side netting from a tough angle on the right side of the pitch at 53:24 after running onto a pass sent in by Jane Barden, extending the lead to 2-0. The goal was Hollenga's team-leading seventh of the season. For Barden, it proved to be her second game-winning assist of 2010.

"Hayley's goal was fantastic, and she's negotiated all of the excitement surrounding her to still get things done on the field," said Clarke.

Hollenga was listed among "Faces in the Crowd" in the Sept. 30 issue of Sports Illustrated, generating plenty of hoopla in Durango and in her hometown, Colorado Springs. The team will host an autograph party from 5-7 p.m. tomorrow at the Irish Embassy Pub, where Hollenga will sign copies of Sports Illustrated.

The junior proved the Sports Illustrated jinx doesn't apply to her, though, by scoring goals in each of her team's two games since the issue hit the newsstands — including what became her fifth game-winner of the season today.

The Orediggers trimmed the lead to a single goal at 77:35 off a beautiful piece of footwork by Anna Evans. Evans collected a pass from Keri Kuhn near the top of the box, sidestepped a Skyhawk defender, dribbled to the left side, then lifted a shot past FLC goalkeeper Christine Schmelzle to the right side of the goal. For Evans, it was her third marker of the season.

Schmelzle made four saves during the game, while her CSM counterpart, Shulze, stopped three shots.

The Skyhawks outshot the Orediggers 13-11, with each team putting five shots on target.

Fort Lewis continues its homestand at 1 p.m.  Sunday when it hosts No. 11 Metro State (8-1-2, 4-1-2) at Dirks Field.
