No. 8 Skyhawk women's basketball team trounces Dominican 87-44

Schreibvogel leads balanced attack

Box Score

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — No. 8 Fort Lewis (4-0 overall) notched its fourth-straight blowout victory by trouncing Dominican (1-3) 87-44 tonight in the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational, hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

“We got out big early and kind of kept the lead,” said sixth-year head coach Mark Kellogg. “We're still not shooting great from the field, but did the other things really well like rebounding. We had 24 offensive rebounds. We also got to the free throw line a ton, which if you're not making shots is what you want to do.”

Balanced scoring and minutes — all 11 Skyhawks played 14 minutes or more — also factored heavily in FLC's favor. This week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the week, Dana Schreibvogel, again led the way with 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Freshman Christine Groh had her biggest game yet with 11 points and eight boards. Mary Rose Paiz added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Abby Jackson had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

All totaled, the Skyhawks outrebounded Dominican 54-37, forced 30 turnovers and had 20 steals.

“We learned a few lessons from yesterday's game and came out with a lot more energy,” said Kellogg. “We just have to start making a few more shots. All in all, it was a very good win.”

The Skyhawks conclude play at the North Star Invitational when they face the host Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks (0-3 prior to tonight's game against Mercyhurst) at 9:30 p.m. tomorrow.
