FAIRBANKS, Alaska — No. 8 Fort Lewis (5-0 overall) completed a dominating sweep of the competition at the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational by beating host Alaska Fairbanks (0-5) 84-52 tonight at the Patty Center. All of the Skyhawk victories were by 32 points or more.
Katerina Garcia came off the bench to lead all players with 17 points. The sophomore guard from Durango made four of five field goal attempts and went 9-of-10 from the foul line. She also added four steals and three assists.
Garcia was one of five Skyhawks to score in double figures:
Mary Rose Paiz and
Abby Jackson scored 13 each, while
Stephanie Beeman and
Andrea Owens notched 10 apiece.
Fort Lewis forced the Nanooks to commit 34 turnovers and held them to just .349 shooting from the field (15 of 43) and .231 from three-point range (.231). The Skyhawks recorded 17 steals, including three each from Paiz and
Andrea Owens.
Fort Lewis had a yeoman's night from the field, shooting .475 from the field (28 of 59), .364 from behind the arc (eight of 22) and .741 from the line (20 of 27).
The lead was relatively close at intermission, with FLC ahead by a 35-23 clip. A 16-0 run to start the second frame put the game out of reach. The Skyhawks held the Nanooks scoreless for the first 5:34 of the latter half.
The three-time defending
