LILBURN, Ga. — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team climbed to No. 3 in the
USA TODAY ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, released today by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The Skyhawks received two first place votes.
Fort Lewis (5-0 overall) defeated Mercyhurst 76-43 on Nov. 25, Dominican (Calif.) 87-44 on Nov. 26 and Alaska Fairbanks 84-52 on Nov. 27 to climb five spots from their No. 8 ranking a week ago.
The Top 10 includes Delta State (Miss.) (5-0), Lander (S.C.) (6-0), Fort Lewis, Washburn (Kan.) (4-0), Seattle Pacific (Wash.) (2-0), Arkansas Tech (5-1), Franklin Pierce (N.H.) (6-0), Holy Family (Pa.) (3-1), Clayton State (Ga.) (8-0) and Emporia State (Kan.) (3-1).
While FLC was the only RMAC to be ranked, three other schools received votes: Adams State, Colorado Mines and Metro State.
The
USA TODAY ESPN board of coaches is made up of 30 head coaches at Division II institutions. Polls are released each Tuesday throughout the season.
The Skyhawks set school and league records with their 35-4 record (18-1 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) last year, winning the RMAC regular season and West Division titles and NCAA Division II Central Region championships along the way and advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II championship game in St. Joseph, Mo.
The three-time defending RMAC champion Skyhawks open league play next weekend with games at UC-Colorado Springs (1-3 overall) and CSU-Pueblo (2-1). Both contests start at 6 p.m. Games can be heard locally on KIUP (930 AM) and at
