COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Matt Morris scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team (5-0 overall, 1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated UC-Colorado Springs (2-3, 0-1) 78-65 at the Gallogly Events Center.

“We were consciously trying to use the post better,” 15th-year head coach Bob Hofman told the Durango Herald.

Relying on the inside game also sent the Skyhawks to the line. Fort Lewis made 25 of 35 free throws on the night.

“I thought we went to the line a lot,” Hofman told the Herald. “We missed some free throws, but we hope that's how we play all year — getting to the line more than other teams.

David Kanyinda added 14 points for the Skyhawks, while DeAndre Lansdowne chipped in with 12. Lansdowne, the Preseason RMAC Defensive Player of the Year, also had five defensive rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.

The Skyhawks shot .421 from the field (24 of 57) and .313 from long range (five of 16). The Mountain Lions, on the other hand, were an icy .391 from the field (25 of 64) and .182 (four of 22) from behind the arc.

The see-saw affair saw the Skyhawks jump out to a 17-7 lead and finish with a 17-6 run. In between, however, the Mountain Lions trimmed the lead to 35-29 at the break and even led 45-40 in the second stanza.

UCCS was led by Jordan McClung, who had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Brent Jones and Alan Paul scored 10 each.

The Skyhawks complete their first RMAC road trip of the season at 8 p.m. Saturday at Massari Arena, home to Colorado State University-Pueblo (1-2, 0-1).
