COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team figured that UC-Colorado Springs would present major challenges for them. After all, the Mountain Lions were coming off an improbable, 70-67 upset of defending national champion Emporia State last week.
The Skyhawks knew Emporia State all too well, having lost to the Hornets in last season's NCAA Division II championship game.
But
Dana Schreibvogel had a career night to propel No. 3 Fort Lewis (6-0 overall, 1-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a gritty, 79-69 win over UC-Colorado Springs (1-4, 0-1) at the Gallogly Events Center.
“A tough, hard-fought win,” was how sixth-year head coach
Mark Kellogg described the game. “We had a little adversity, so it was nice to see how we'd respond. We had the lead up to 18 and they made a big run. We had to battle back. That's a much improved Springs team that will beat people on that floor. It was a good atmosphere to play in and a good learning experience from it.”
Kellogg's Skyhawks hadn't been challenged much thus far in 2010-11, with their closest game being a 24-point win over then-No. 7 West Texas A&M on Nov. 20.
Schreibvogel, who set career highs for points (28) and rebounds (11) and notched her third double-double of the season, was simply too much for the Mountain Lions. The 6-foot junior forward was a juggernaut on both ends of the court. On the defensive half, she grabbed 10 rebounds and had four steals. On the offensive side, she went 10 for 17 from the field, making both three-pointers and all six free throws that she attempted.
“Dana was obviously just unbelievably good,” said Kellogg. “She was the best player on the floor.”
Mary Rose Paiz also had a double-double, scoring 13 points while grabbing 11 boards. “Mary struggled, but battled for a double-double,” said Kellogg.
Abby Jackson added 17 points and five assists and made five of seven three-pointers. “Abby got some open looks and made them,” Kellogg said.
The Skyhawks led 35-29 at intermission, but struggled with poor first half shooting (.364 from the field). Turnovers also plagued them throughout the night, as FLC committed an uncharacteristic 21 miscues. “We still turned it over too much,” said Kellogg.
Shooting fortunes changed in the second stanza, with the Skyhawks making 14 of 25 field goal attempts to build their largest lead of 18 points midway through the frame.
The Mountain Lions were led by Lauren Wolfinger's 24 points. Ashley Miller and Jessica Brown scored 10 each.
Fort Lewis continues its road trip at Colorado State-Pueblo (3-1, 1-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
“We know what that rivalry has been over the years, so we'll expect nothing less tomorrow night,” Kellogg said.
