February 14, 2010. Pueblo, CO. - The second half was unkind to the Fort Lewis College men's team in its game against host CSU-Pueblo on Saturday night. After trailing just 40-34 at the half, the Skyhawks were victims of a 16-3 Thunderwolves' run to open the second half, and FLC lost at Pueblo 81-68.
The win was CSU-Pueblo's first over the Fort Lewis men since 2002.
“It's going to happen sometime, may as well be on the 13th," Skyhawks coach Bob Hofman said. “Too bad it wasn't Friday."
The way the game played out for FLC, it may as well have been Friday the 13th.
The Thunderwolves led from almost start to finish on Saturday, save for a couple brief periods in the first half where the game was tied, and the scant 31 seconds that FLC had a lead.
After falling behind by 19 early in the second half, the Skyhawks (16-7, 10-5 RMAC) were able to cut the lead to 10, 68-58, on a DeAndre Landsdowne jumper with 7:29 remaining. But the Thunderwolves responded with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to break open the game for good 81-60. FLC would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way.
“It's such a momentum game, and (Pueblo) never really lost the momentum the entire game," Hofman said.
Pueblo (14-8, 9-6) had four players score in double figures, led by Mark Williams with 19 points and Kris Lawrie with 13. Landsdowne led the Skyhawks with 17 points, and David Kanyinda added 14.
The Thunderwolves also helped themselves from the free throw line, going 30-of-40 from the line.
By contrast, FLC had only 19 attempts, converting 13.
Hofman said if the Skyhawks can get back to the brand of basketball they played earlier in the year, they should wrap up the season just fine.
The Skyhawks will be back home next weekend where they will face Western State on Friday night
and rival Mesa State on Saturday night.
