February 6th, 2010.  Grand Junction, CO. -
The sixth-ranked Skyhawks maintained their winning ways Friday night with a dominant 63-37 win over Mesa State College in Grand Junction.

The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team improved its record to 21-2 overall and 11-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mesa State fell to 6-12 overall and 4-8 in the RMAC.

“It was a different style of play (Friday night)," FLC head coach Mark Kellogg said. “It was a little more grinding (Friday), but it is good to win in different ways."

Katie Mackey started the first half hot, hitting two 3-pointers early, leading Fort Lewis to a 10-2 lead early.

Katie Mackey did a good job attacking early and helping us get the lead," Kellogg said.

The Mavericks, assisted by former DHS girls head coach Mary Psenda-Doane on the bench, clawed their way back into the game and cut the lead to one point about halfway through the first half, but the 'Hawks quickly pulled away again.

Abby Jackson hit two of her five 3s late in the half, giving the Skyhawks a 30-18 lead going into halftime.

Mesa State started the game with just eight players available because of injury, but after yet another injury they were forced to play much of the game with only seven players.

The second half was much of the same as the FLC women led by as much as 29.

Jackson led all scorers with 15 points, while Mackey and Allison Rosel each added 14. Katie Mihalco added 10 off the bench.

“Abby really spread the lead for us (Friday)," Kellogg said. “And Katie (Mihalco) was great off the bench for us."

Kellogg credited halftime adjustments for the team's big second half and lopsided victory.

“We made great adjustments (Friday night), and while we didn't force a lot of turnovers, I think our pressure dictated play," Kellogg said.

The FLC women play again at 6 p.m. today against Western State.

“We can take something out of this game. We got better," Kellogg said. “Now we need to get ready for Western State." heraldsports@durangoherald.com
