March 14, 2010.  Farmington, NM.  -
The Fort Lewis College softball team split another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader with Chadron State on Saturday afternoon in Farmington.

The Skyhawks won the opener 4-2 behind a solo home run from Jordan Willis and a three-run homer from Ashley Hibbs.

Fort Lewis (6-9, 5-5) dropped the second game 6-4, giving up three unearned runs because of defensive breakdowns.

“To be quite honest, we could have defended the bunt much better in the second game," FLC head coach Pam Adams said. “We had two throwing errors that cost us. Those plays hurt really bad," Adams said.

“And they got some timely hitting. We just didn't take care of our defense, and that's disappointing."

The opener was far from disappointing with Hibbs' big homer. She also had a two-run home run in the second game.

“We hit the ball pretty well in the first game," Adams said. “Ashley Hibbs had a big, big day for us."

Jordan Willis was 4-for-4 in the opener. She added two more hits in the second game.

Kayla Bruner was 2-for-3 in the opener for the Skyhawks.

Kassie Haubert, who pitched five innings and picked up the win in the opener, also had two hits.

Stephanie Janes pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Fort Lewis in the first game. She had five consecutive strikeouts and picked up a save.

Janes, Jayme Fuller and Haubert all pitched in Game 2.

“We can't keep splitting (doubleheaders) with teams," Adams said. “We're better than that."

The Skyhawks are scheduled to host Regis in RMAC doubleheaders next weekend. Those games might be played at Aspen Field on the Fort Lewis College campus, Adams said.

If the field is not yet playable, she said the games likely will be moved to Farmington.
