March 9, 2010.  Durango, CO. -
The Skyhawks came from behind once. But they couldn't come back twice.

The Fort Lewis College softball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the top of the fifth inning during Monday's game at Fort Hays State in Hays, Kan.

But Fort Hays scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take the 5-4 nonconference victory.

Fort Lewis was coming off a doubleheader sweep of Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday in Hays, which hosted the games that originally were scheduled for Nebraska.

The Skyhawks and the host Tigers opted to add a single game Monday to their schedules since Fort Lewis was already in town for the games that had been snowed out in Kearney.

Fort Lewis took its 4-3 lead in the fifth when Brooke Bails singled up the middle to open the inning. She scored on an RBI double to left by Kayla Bruner.

Ashley Hibbs of FLC reached on a fielding error. After a fielder's choice produced an out at third, FLC scored again when Hibbs crossed the plate after a wild pitch.

Denae Benally reached on another Fort Hays error, with Jayme Fuller scoring on the play.

Heather Johnson followed with a single to right, scoring Kassie Haubert, who had walked earlier.

The Tigers ended the inning with a double play.

Trisha Holzman had the hit in the sixth inning to put Fort Hays back in front.

She drove in the tying and go-ahead runs on a single to center.

Bails led Fort Lewis with two hits Monday.

Johnson and Bruner had RBIs for the Skyhawks, 4-8 overall, 3-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Stephanie Janes started in the circle for Fort Lewis. Haubert finished for the Skyhawks, taking the loss.

Kayla Rupa of Fort Hays picked up the win. She's 2-3 on the season after pitching all seven innings. She allowed only one earned run.

The Skyhawks are scheduled to return home to host their first home games of the season this week.

Fort Lewis will play Mesa State in an RMAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Those games likely will be moved to Farmington because of snow in Durango.

An announcement on the location of the RMAC doubleheader is expected today from Fort Lewis College officials.
