DURANGO, Colo. – Another game, another victory thanks to a set piece.
Junior midfielder
Sara Egbom struck a free kick from 30 yards out at 14:26 that slipped through the hands of UC-Colorado Springs goalkeeper Kelly Schroeder into the side netting as No. 12 Fort Lewis College (7-1 overall, 3-1
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated the visiting Mountain Lions (4-3 overall, 1-2 RMAC) in women's soccer action today at Dirks Field.
“Bottom line is it was a set piece to win the game,” said fourth-year head coach
Damian Clarke. “In the last three games, we've finished three set pieces.”
Last Sunday, the Skyhawks scored a pair of goals off corner kicks in a 2-1 overtime win at Nebraska-Kearney.
While Egbom's second goal of the season was enough to propel FLC to victory, it was the play of the Skyhawk defense that again shined.
“The back four once again had a very solid performance,” said Clarke, who used six players in the back. “We're very happy with our two freshman center backs. Both
Lauren Riley and
Madyson Wellcome are outstanding footballers.”
The defense was so good that senior goalkeeper
Christine Schmelzle only had to make routine saves on three long shots to post her fifth shutout of the season.
The Skyhawks outshot UC-Colorado Springs 16-8, but only managed five shots on goal against the Mountain Lions. Schroeder finished the match with four saves, including one of the spectacular variety off a header by
Torrey Larson late in the game. FLC also skipped a pair of shots off the crossbar in the second half.
Fort Lewis hosts Adams State (3-4 overall, 2-1 RMAC) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Dirks Field.
