Golden, Colo. – The No. 1 ranked and defending NCAA Division II champion Fort Lewis College men's soccer team saw its 21-game winning streak snapped tonight in a 1-0 loss to No. 18 Colorado Mines.
Basaki Baker scored the lone goal for the Orediggers (1-0-0 overall) when he found the far post three minutes into the second half. Philip Wilson, who missed a scoring chance in the 27th minute, found space on the left side and slotted a pass to Baker for the tally.
The Skyhawks (0-1-0) outshot the Orediggers 6-3 in the second half, but couldn't solve CSM goalkeeper Manville Strand, who recorded his first shutout of the season by making a pair of saves. Fort Lewis attacked with persistence in the waning minutes as
Abdel Becerra's chance in front of the goal following a corner kick was blocked by a Mines defender and
Berekk Blackwell's shot in the 90th minute was saved by Strand.
Fort Lewis outshot the Orediggers 9-8 and had nearly three times the corner kicks as Mines (11-4), but the Orediggers had a far greater efficiency, peppering FLC goalkeeper
Nate Bell with six shots on goal.
The win was Mines' first over Fort Lewis since 2004. During the five seasons from 2005-2009, FLC went 12-0-2 against the Orediggers and won the three matches in 2009 by an aggregate score of 11-1.
While Fort Lewis and Colorado Mines are league rivals, the fact that they chose to schedule a non-conference game against one another speaks volumes to the level of respect the two programs have for each other.
Fort Lewis will square off against nationally-ranked West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. Sunday in a neutral-site match hosted by Mines.
The Skyhawks and Orediggers meet in conference play at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Dirks Field.
