DURANGO, Colo. — Mary Rose Paiz scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead No. 5 Fort Lewis (17-1 overall, 12-1 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 77-50 win over Regis (7-10, 6-7) tonight at Whalen Gymnasium.
Normally a fast-starting team, the Skyhawks came out a bit sluggish, building just an 11-10 lead nearly six minutes into the contest. A 13-2 run stretched the lead to 24-12 midway through the first half and the Skyhawks eventually coasted to their 41st consecutive victory on their home court.
Paiz was one of three FLC players to score in double figures.
Dana Schreibvogel, the league's leading scorer and a player who rarely leaves the court, tallied 11 points in just 18 minutes of action.
Erika Richards came off the bench to add 11.
Jenna Santistevan had her second big defensive game of the weekend, grabbing eight rebounds (four defensive) and notching three steals and a blocked shot.
All 11 Skyhawks scored.
Meghan Nickell led the Rangers with 15 points, while Lauren Luebbe added 10. Katie Vader had seven assists.
Fort Lewis' pressure defense forced 20 Regis turnovers and limited the Rangers to just .345 shooting from the field (19 of 55) and .353 from behind the arc (six of 17). The Skyhawks recorded 13 steals (three each by Santistevan,
Katerina Garcia and
Ashley Kuchar) and three blocks.
While Fort Lewis cruised to an easy win, the two other teams tied with FLC atop the RMAC standings faced tough battles. Metro State (16-1, 12-1) hit a jumper at the buzzer to edge Adams State 54-53 while Colorado Christian (13-3, 12-1) pulled out a 75-68 win at Mesa State.
Fort Lewis plays just one game next week, a 6 p.m. tilt at Adams State (12-7, 7-6) next Saturday. The Skyhawks previously defeated the Grizzlies 77-70 at Whalen Gymnasium on Dec. 11.
