KEARNEY, Neb. — No. 3 Fort Lewis (12-0 overall, 7-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) shot 61 percent from the field to defeat Nebraska-Kearney (5-7, 4-4) 99-76 today at the Health & Sports Center.
“It was our best offensive output of the season, not just points but the way we played offensively,” said sixth-year head coach
Mark Kellogg. “We did a great job moving the ball, making extra passes and getting good shots.”
Six Skyhawks scored in double figures as FLC extended its school records for most wins to start a season (12) and most consecutive road victories (12), dating back to a 73-64 loss at West Texas A&M on Jan. 3, 2010.
Dana Schreibvogel led the way with 20 points and eight rebounds. She shot .750 from the field (eight of 12), .750 from the line (three of four) and made her only three-point attempt.
Other Skyhawks to score in double figures included
Erika Richards (15 points),
Jenna Santistevan (14),
Mary Rose Paiz (13),
Abby Jackson (10) and
Katerina Garcia (10). All 11 FLC players scored.
As a team, FLC made 36 of 59 field goal attempts, and shot .676 from the field in the second stanza (23 of 34) when they blew open a relatively close game (43-35 at halftime). Fort Lewis led by as many as 30 points late in the contest.
The Skyhawks also were deadly from behind the arc, shooting .500 for the game (10 of 20). Paiz was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range, while
Stephanie Beeman made both of her long distance bombs.
Fort Lewis distributed the ball well, assisting on 26 of their 36 field goals. Garcia led the way with seven assists, while Paiz added six and Jackson five.
Its trademark pressure defense also helped its cause, as Fort Lewis notched 18 steals (four by Garcia) and four blocked shots (two by Santistevan) while forcing 27 Loper turnovers.
Nebraska-Kearney was led by Vanessa Leeper (17 points), Megan Becker (15 points, 11 rebounds), Debi Johnson (13 points) and Lea Ann Jameson (10 points).
“We weren't great defensively and gave away too many easy baskets,” Kellogg said.
The defensive breakdowns allowed UNK to tie the score at 35 with 1:32 remaining in the first half. An 8-0 run by Fort Lewis to end the frame — keyed by three-pointers by Beeman and Schreibvogel and a long two-point basket by Schreibvogel with three seconds left in the half — gave FLC some breathing room at intermission.
Fort Lewis returns home to Whalen Gymnasium for RMAC games against New Mexico Highlands (5-8, 2-5) and Western New Mexico (0-11, 0-7) Friday and Saturday. Both contests begin at 5:30 p.m. and precede the men's games against the same foes.
