Lucky 13: No. 3 Skyhawks double-up on Cowgirls, 66-33

Skyhawks hold opponent to fourth lowest total in school history

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — No. 3 Fort Lewis (13-0 overall, 8-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) held New Mexico Highlands (5-10, 2-7) to the fourth-lowest opponent's scoring output in school history in a 66-33 win at Whalen Gymnasium tonight.

“We defended really, really well,” said sixth-year head coach Mark Kellogg.

The visiting Cowgirls shot just .228 from the field (13 of 57) and made just one of 13 three-point attempts while committing 27 turnovers. The Skyhawks notched 12 steals and four blocked shots while grabbing 36 defensive rebounds.

Kellogg was able to utilize his entire bench, as all FLC players scored. “When you get a big lead, it gives a lot of people the opportunity to play.”

The Skyhawk skipper lauded freshmen Christine Groh and Erika Richards for their efforts off the bench.

“Christine battled really hard,” he said of his backup center whose line was six rebounds, four points, two steals and one assist in 18 minutes of action.

“Erika shot it well,” he said of his backup shooting guard — a player who was limited in her effectiveness earlier this year due to a broken nose that forced her to wear a mask. Richards scored 13 points and made three of six treys.

Kellogg also commended freshman starting guard Ashley Kuchar for her career-high seven assists.

The Skyhawks were led by Dana Schreibvogel, who scored 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jenna Santistevan led all Skyhawk rebounders with 10 boards.

The Cowgirls were led by China Smith, who had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

New Mexico Highlands' 33 points for a single game is only exceeded by Northern New Mexico (18 points in a 111-18 loss on Dec. 22, 2009), Johnson & Wales (30 points in a 93-30 loss on Jan. 5, 2003) and UC-Colorado Springs (32 points in a 69-32 loss on Feb. 18, 2002). It was also within one point of being the fewest points ever scored by a Division II opponent (UCCS' 32; Northern New Mexico and Johnson & Wales are NAIA schools).

Fort Lewis continues its home stand at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow night when it hosts Western New Mexico (0-13, 0-9).
