Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis men's basketball team (11-2 overall, 7-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) exploded for 61 first half points en route to a 103-61 win over a weary Western New Mexico squad (5-12, 5-5) tonight at Whalen Gymnasium.

Fort Lewis torched the nets in the first half, shooting .541 from the field (20 of 37), .647 from long distance (11 of 17) and .833 from the free throw line (10 of 12). After Mike Matthews' fast break three-pointer dropped through the bucket in the waning moments of the opening half, FLC carried a 61-29 advantage into the locker room for intermission.

Little changed in the second stanza, aside from the Skyhawks cooling off from beyond the arc. Fort Lewis actually improved its shooting from the field, making 16 of 29 field goals (.552) in the half.

Six Skyhawks scored in double figures, led by David Kanyinda's 16-point effort. All of Kanyinda's scoring happened in the first half, as he made four of six from three-point land. Other Skyhawks to hit double digits included Daniel Steffensen (14 points, 4-of-5 on treys), Matt Morris (11), Matthias Weissl (11), Matthews (11) and DeAndre Lansdowne (10).

The Mustangs were led by TJ Riley and Andy Sohlich, each of whom scored 10 points.

Western New Mexico wrapped up a grueling stretch that saw them play five road games in seven days. The Mustangs opened the New Year strong, beating Colorado Christian (80-79) and Colorado Mines (97-93) in league play on Jan. 2-3. Two days later, they hung tough against NCAA Division I Colorado, losing 92-70 in Boulder. WNMU dropped a close RMAC contest last night at Adams State by a 103-96 margin.

Fort Lewis, which sits just one game out of first place in the RMAC, hits the road for games at Colorado Christian (4-8, 3-6) and Colorado Mines (11-2, 7-2) next Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 8 p.m., immediately following the FLC women's basketball games against the same two schools.
