DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team defeated Lamar Community College 113-34 tonight in exhibition action in Whalen Gymnasium.
Fort Lewis, ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II by the Women's DII Bulletin earlier this month, saw 11 players who suited up get into the scoring column. Five Skyhawks scored in double figures, including
Ashley Kuchar (23),
Dana Schreibvogel (20),
Erika Richards (13),
Christie Groh (10), and
Jenna Santistevan (10).
“It was good for us to play some different competition other than ourselves,” said seventh-year FLC head coach Mark Kellogg. “They challenged us a little bit in the first half when they made a run, which was good for us. We got a lot of kids some quality minutes. We're working in the right direction.”
Fort Lewis led the Runnin' Lopes 49-25 in the first half. Lamar, which competes at the National Junior College Athletic Association level in Region IX, ran out of gas in the second half, in which FLC outscored them 64-9.
The Skyhawks, who have advanced to four straight NCAA Division II playoffs, forced 42 turnovers while recording 33 assists and 17 steals. FLC also outrebounded LCC 46-23, including a 19-4 advantage in offensive caroms. Freshman point guard
Erin Curry had six helpers, while junior
Alex Easterbrook had five assists and four steals.
The Skyhawks shot 52.6 percent from the field (41 of 78) and 90.3 percent from the line (28 of 31), but struggled from behind the arc, making just 17.6 percent of their three-point attempts (three of 17).
The Runnin' Lopes were led by Brandi Charles (nine points) and Maryam Dogo (eight points, eight rebounds).
The Skyhawks have one more tune-up on their preseason schedule — an alumnae game at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 5 in Whalen Gymnasium. Players from the 1980s through last year's lone senior,
Abby Jackson, are expected to return to campus to challenge the Skyhawks — including several members of FLC's 2009-10 squad that advanced to the NCAA Division II championship game.
Fort Lewis opens its season at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, when they travel to Portales, N.M., to face Eastern New Mexico.
