GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team prides itself on forcing turnovers in bunches, and the No. 6 Skyhawks (7-1 overall, 4-0 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) did just that Friday, forcing 31 turnovers in a 69-55 win over Colorado Mesa (6-3, 4-1) at Brownson Arena.
Fort Lewis head coach Mark Kellogg said it was the most aggressive his team had been all year on the defensive end, although he added he hopes his team will give those possessions back less frequently. FLC had 22 turnovers of its own.
“We did a great job. That's probably as active as we've been all year defensively,” he said.
FLC held a Mavericks' team playing without leading scorer Kelsey Sigl to just 39 percent shooting from the field.
Where CMU (6-3) got most of its offense was on second-chance points: The Mavericks outrebounded FLC 43-29, including a 20-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
“We got crushed. Horrendous job of getting on the body,” Kellogg said. “Maybe 30 of their 55 points were on offensive rebounds and putbacks.”
The Skyhawks (7-1) made up for the rebounding woes with an aggressive offensive approach that allowed them to get to the free throw line regularly.
Fort Lewis hit 24 of 30 free throw attempts, while the Mavericks made just seven of 16 attempts.
Dana Schreibvogel, who led all scorers with 21 points, hit nine free throws.
Mary Rose Paiz had 13 points and nine rebounds for Fort Lewis, and
Ashley Kuchar and
Jenna Santistevan added eight points each.
Tara Gehring led CMU with 15 points, and Katrina Selsor had 11 rebounds but mustered only four points.
The Skyhawks wrap up their pre-holiday schedule at 6 p.m. tonight, when they travel to Gunnison to face Western State (6-5, 5-0). The Mountaineers defeated Adams State 62-44 last night.
