Cassaday’s 19 points lifts Skyhawks to 84-73 win over Mountain Lions

Five Skyhawks score in double figures in league opener

DURANGO, Colo. — Josh Cassaday came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points to lead Fort Lewis (3-2 overall, 1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to an 84-73 win over UC-Colorado Springs (1-6, 0-1).

Cassaday, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colo., set or matched career highs in points, free throws (six), field goals (five), and three-pointers (three) and didn't miss a shot during the game. He added two points, two assists, and two steals in just 11 minutes of action.
 
Five Skyhawks scored in double figures, including Mike Matthews (14, 3-of-4 from behind the arc), Torrey Udall (12 points, eight rebounds, two blocks), Matthias Weissl (11, 3-of-4 from long range), and Matt Billups (10).
 
The punishing trio of FLC centers grabbed 24 rebounds and blocked five shots. Matt Morris led the way with 14 caroms, including 11 on the defensive end.
 
The Mountain Lions relied on blistering shooting from three-point range in the first half, when they went 9-of-12 from long range (75 percent). The hot shooting allowed them to keep things close for much of the game, trialing just 45-42 at intermission.
 
George Pollard led the way with 18 points for UCCS, going 6-of-13 from three-point land while distributing six assists. Alex Kohler added 17 points and was 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Matt Heydman had nine rebounds for the Mountain Lions, including five offensive caroms.
 
The Skyhawks made the most of their chances from the foul line, shooting 87.5 percent (21 of 24). The Mountain Lions went to the line just six times and made just one free throw (16.7 percent). UCCS didn't attempt a free throw in the second half.
 
Fort Lewis concludes its two-game homestand at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow, when it hosts Colorado State-Pueblo (3-2, 0-1), which lost 70-69 at Adams State (4-0, 1-0) tonight in Alamosa.
