Sixth-ranked Fort Lewis cruises to 91-66 win over Nebraska-Kearney

Five Skyhawks score in double figures in balanced attack

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — Five players scored in double figures as No. 6 Fort Lewis (10-1 overall, 7-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) cruised to a 91-66 win over Nebraska-Kearney (2-11, 2-6) tonight in Whalen Gymnasium.

“Another good effort for 34 minutes. We kind of fell apart in the last six,” said seventh-year FLC head coach Mark Kellogg. “I thought our depth came through. We were in attack mode again tonight with a lot of free throws. We made them we got there.”

Fort Lewis shot 80.6 percent from the foul line, making 29-of-36 charity shots including 19-of-24 in the first frame when it built a 43-28 halftime lead.

Five Skyhawks scored in double figures and all 12 FLC players saw at least six minutes of action.

Jenna Santistevan led the way with 15 points, adding five rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists, and a pair of steals. After struggling in the first half, she was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field in the second stanza.

Dana Schreibvogel (14 points), Ashley Kuchar (14), Erika Richards (11), and Christie Groh (10) also scored in double digits.

Schreibvogel, who was plagued by fouls all night long and eventually fouled out midway through the second half, was limited to just 16 minutes of action.

“We extend the lead even when someone like Dana goes out,” Kellogg said. “We can replace one All-American with another off the bench.”

Kellogg, of course, was referring to reserve post player Jamie Simmons, who came off the bench to score nine points and grab six rebounds.

All totaled, the FLC bench outscored the Loper reserves 35-22. The Skyhawks also dominated the paint, outscoring their Nebraska foes 46-22 inside. The Skyhawks also won the fast break battle, outdistancing UNK 26-10 in the transition game.

Fort Lewis also distributed 25 assists during the game, with Kuchar, Katerina Garcia, and Mary Rose Paiz each notching four helpers.

On the defensive side, FLC forced 29 turnovers while recording 20 steals and seven blocks. Kuchar, Schreibvogel, and Stephanie Beeman had three steals apiece.

Nebraska-Kearney's Vanessa Leeper Jones led all players with 22 points by going 7-of-11 from the field, 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.

Debi Johnson added 15 points, while Lea Ann Jameson came off the bench to chip in 13 for the Lopers.

The rebounding battle was even, with each team grabbing 32 caroms (11 per team on the offensive glass).

Fort Lewis travels south next weekend for its annual New Mexico swing. The Skyhawks play at New Mexico Highlands (7-5, 3-5) at 6 p.m. Friday and Western New Mexico (0-11, 0-8) at 5:30 p.m. next Saturday.

“I feel like we're getting a little bit better each game … and that's scary for this team,” said Kellogg.
