Schreibvogel, Santistevan pace No. 7 Fort Lewis to 71-61 win over CSU-Pueblo

Skyhawks never trail as four players score in double figures

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — Dana Schreibvogel and Jenna Santistevan combined for 30 points as No. 7 Fort Lewis (5-1 overall, 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated Colorado State-Pueblo (4-2, 1-1) 71-61 tonight in Whalen Gymnasium.

Schreibvogel scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, while Santistevan had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

With tipoff less than an hour after the Fort Lewis men's soccer team had won their third national championship in a 3-2 overtime thriller over Lynn (Fla.) — causing Skyhawk women's basketball players and coaches to celebrate during pregame — FLC jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first three-and-a-half minutes and never trailed in the contest. Schreibvogel, in particular, came out on fire, sinking a pair of free throws, a three-pointer, and a fast break layup to account for seven of her team's first 10 points.

Fort Lewis extended the lead to 37-18 with 4:26 left in the first half on a Jamie Simmons steal and layup. The ThunderWolves shaved 10 points off the deficit the remainder of the first half, culminating with Kendall Babler's layup with 11 seconds left to send the teams into their locker rooms at 41-32.

The Skyhawks led by as many as 22 in the second half.

Erika Richards (10 points) and Simmons (10 points, nine rebounds) also scored in double figures for FLC.

Babler led the ThunderWolves with 12 points, while Erica Hicks scored 11.

Fort Lewis shot well from the field, converting 46.7 percent of their field goals (28-of-60, including 53.3 percent in the first half) and 76.9 percent of their foul shots (10-of-13). The Skyhawks committed an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers, though.

FLC's defense limited the ThunderWolves to just 33.8 percent shooting from the field (23-of-68) and 25 percent from behind the arc (5-of-20). The Skyhawks also forced CSUP into making 19 turnovers.

Fort Lewis begins a three-game road stretch next Saturday when they travel to Adams State (2-4, 1-1) for a 6 p.m. showdown with the Grizzlies.
