Fort Lewis men turn in gritty effort to beat UC-Colorado Springs 73-55

Defense, rebounding propel Skyhawks to season’s 17th win

Box Score

DURANGO, Colo. — Relying on old-fashioned hard work when their shooting touch failed, Fort Lewis (17-5 overall, 13-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeated UC-Colorado Springs (7-15, 5-12) 73-55 tonight in Whalen Gymnasium.

In a game tailor-made for its grittier players like Kyle Behrens (13 points, 12 rebounds), Connor Drumm (nine points) and Matt Morris (eight points, nine rebounds), the Skyhawks overcame dismal shooting from the field (21 of 59, .356) and behind the arc (three of 13, .231).

Fort Lewis outrebounded UC-Colorado Springs 46-35 and pressured the Mountain Lions to shoot equally poorly (.357 from the field, .167 from three-point range).

The physical game saw 42 fouls (21 each) and 63 free throws (37 by the Skyhawks). UCCS' Tanner Adams was ejected with 8:06 remaining in the first half after he committed a flagrant personal foul against Drumm. Mountain Lion head coach Russ Caton also left the game early, picking up a pair of technical fouls with 7:05 left in the second stanza.

DeAndre Lansdowne (12 points) and Matt Billups (11) joined Behrens in double figures for FLC.

The Mountain Lions were paced by Brent Jones (13 points, six rebounds, four blocks) and Ben Feilmeier (10 points).

One night after becoming the Skyhawks' career scoring leader, Lansdowne set another school record — this time for most career field goals (628). His three four baskets against the Mountain Lions shot him past FLC Athletic Hall of Famer Steve Schutz (1993-96), who recorded 626 field goals during his career.

Fort Lewis, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II Central Region, moved back into third place in the topsy-turvy RMAC standings over the weekend. FLC trails Colorado Mines (19-3, 15-3) and Metro State (18-5, 15-4) and is just ahead of New Mexico Highlands (17-6, 13-6).

Fort Lewis has its final two home regular season games of the season next weekend when it hosts Mines at 7:30 p.m. next Friday and Colorado Christian (7-15, 6-12) at 7:30 p.m. the following night.
