LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Kayla Bruner's three-run homer in the top of the seventh lifted Fort Lewis (1-3 overall) to a 7-6 win over Saint Martin's (Wis.) (1-3) yesterday afternoon at the Desert Stinger, hosted by Montana State-Billings.

The victory gave Skyhawk skipper Kira Zeiter her first win as a collegiate head coach and helped FLC salvage a 1-1 split on the day. In yesterday's evening game, the Skyhawks were drubbed 22-2 by Augustana (S.D.) (4-0) 22-2.

The game between the Skyhawks and Saints was tied 3-3 after three innings. Neither squad could push across a run during the next three innings, setting up Bruner's heroics. Benefitting from a pair of Saints errors, the Skyhawks pieced together a seventh-inning rally. Jordan Willis singled to center, advancing Joanna Young to third. The next batter, Chelsea Rodriguez, reached on a fielding error by SMU third baseman Morgan Klemm, plating Young and putting the Skyhawks ahead 4-3.

Enter Bruner, the Skyhawk catcher who hit four bombs last year. Her three-run shot to left center gave FLC some cushion at 7-3.

The Saints weren't done, though. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Klemm and Kelsie McGladrey smacked back-to-back doubles to trim the lead to 7-5. Aubree Pocklington singled down the left field line to cut the lead to one run. A single by Tiffany Griffiths put the winning run on first and moved the tying run to second.

FLC pitcher Kassie Haubert (1-1), who went the distance, got pinch hitter Kristine Kaneshiro to fly out to left to end the game. Haubert struck out just one during the game, but only allowed two earned runs.

Bruner was the offensive hero for the Skyhawks, matching a career high with four RBI. She singled earlier in the game to go 2-for-4.

Destinee DeHerrera also went 2-for-4 for FLC, which stroked eight hits off of SMU pitchers Cassy South and Joslyn Eugenio.

“We got the win in game one,” said a relieved Zeiter. “I just hope they don't give me too many gray hairs before this season's over. [It's] the second nail-biter in two days.”

The Skyhawks were no match for powerful Augustana in the nightcap. The Vikings exploded for 22 runs and 21 hits, putting up crooked numbers in all five innings before the game was called due to the eight-run rule.

Elizabeth Murray and Traci Fransen each belted two homers for Augie, while Theresa McMahon and Taylor Kapsch also had round-trippers. Murray finished with six RBI, while Kapsch drove in five.

The Skyhawks used three pitchers in the game. Alyse Harris (0-2) started, but surrendered four hits and four runs without getting an out. Fransen's first homer, a two-run shot, chased Harris with no outs in the first.

Relievers Stephanie Janes and Haubert didn't fare much better.

Augie's Mickey Anderson surrendered just two runs, two hits and one walk to earn the victory.

The Skyhawks conclude their games in Sin City with a 2:30 p.m. showdown Sunday afternoon against Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.) (3-6).
