Notre Dame de Namur edges Skyhawks in seventh

Ortega’s single drives in two as Argonaut’s rally late

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Notre Dame de Namur (4-1 overall) scored two runs on a two-out single in the top of the seventh to defeat Fort Lewis (1-4) 3-1 yesterday afternoon at the Desert Stinger, hosted by Montana State-Billings.

Mary Ortega singled to center, plating Janae Reyes and Emily Castro and spoiling an otherwise strong outing by Skyhawk pitcher Kassie Haubert (1-2), who surrendered eight hits and five walks while striking out three.

Fort Lewis took an early lead when shortstop Jordan Willis homered to left with one out in the first. She later singled to go 2-for-3 on the day.

Catcher Kayla Bruner was the only other Skyhawk to get a hit off Argonaut pitchers Hillary Ruddick and Sammy McConvey. Ruddick went five innings and struck out four while giving up just two hits. McConvey pitched the last two innings of relief to earn the victory, giving up just one hit and two walks.

“This was a starting point for us,” first-year head coach Kira Zeiter told the Durango Herald of the 1-4 record the Skyhawks posted at the Desert Classic. “Our coaching staff along with our team, we now know what we need to focus on two weeks from now.”

The Skyhawks open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at UC-Colorado Springs (0-4 overall) on Feb. 26-27. Games are slated for noon and 2 p.m. on Feb. 26 and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Feb. 27.
