COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College softball team (4-5 overall, 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) swept a doubleheader from UC-Colorado Springs (4-9, 1-3) today at Mountain Lion Field. The Skyhawks won the first game 7-3 and the second 8-6..

“We're a team and it's a team effort. That's why we're successful,” said first-year FLC head coach Kira Zeiter. “I am proud of the way that we played today.”

Zeiter described her team's hitting — 26 hits and four home runs for the day — as “timely,” “consistent” and “solid, one through nine.”

“When you're able to do that and play together as a team, you're going to come out with a lot of victories,” she added.

Hayley Bolyard and Kayla Bruner each homered in the first game, with Bolyard going 3-for-4. Kassie Haubert (3-2) went the distance, striking out four while giving up just three runs.

Lara Mathewson had two hits for the Mountain Lions and hit her second round-tripper of the season. Jessica Belstering (4-4) pitched into the fifth inning, allowing five earned runs to take the loss.

In the nightcap, a big third inning propelled the Skyhawks. Bruner led off with her fourth tater of the season. After a Bolyard single, Natalie Janes belted her first bomb of the season to give FLC a 6-2 lead.

Erica Conley went 3-for-4 and score two runs for the Skyhawks, while Janes was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Alyse Harris (1-2) pitched the first four innings to pick up her first collegiate victory. She struck out three and allowed five hits and five earned runs. Stephanie Janes went the final three innings, allowing just one run while striking out three to earn her first save of the season.

“We had really nice pitching from all three pitchers in both games,” said Zeiter.

Jenna Mott (0-3) pitched seven innings for UCCS. Mathewson had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Erin Milburn went 3-for-3 with three RBI.

The Skyhawks open their home schedule next weekend with a four-game series against preseason RMAC East Division favorite Metro State (7-5, 2-2). Saturday's games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. at Aspen Field; Sunday's games begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
