DURANGO, Colo. — Natalie Janes belted a grand slam and hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Fort Lewis (8-11 overall, 7-7 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to an 8-7 win over New Mexico Highlands (6-19, 3-13) today in the first game of a doubleheader at Aspen Field.
In the nightcap, Melissa Martinez (4-12) pitched a two-hit gem while striking out 13 Skyhawks in an 8-1 Cowgirl victory, salvaging a sweep in both today's doubleheader and the four-game weekend series.
In game one, Janes got the Skyhawks started quickly by blasting a towering shot to straightaway center off NMHU's Ashley Paiz (2-6) — her second bomb of the season.
Paiz helped her own cause with a three-run triple in the second to level the score at 4-4.
Chelsea Rodriguez answered for FLC, smashing a two-run homer to center — her third long ball of the year — in the bottom of the second.
Highlands clawed out three runs in the next four innings while holding FLC to one run on an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of
Jordan Willis in the fourth.
Skyhawk starting pitcher
Kassie Haubert was lifted after six innings in favor of reliever
Alyse Harris. After giving up a leadoff double to Roxanne Avalos and a single up the middle by Alyssa Ramirez, she worked herself out of the jam. First, she got Amanda Beauchamp to hit a grounder to Willis, who threw Avalos out at home on a diving tag by Skyhawk catcher
Kayla Bruner. She then struck out Alisha Perry and got Paiz to line out to left.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Bruner singled up the middle to start the rally. Haley Bolyard knocked a base hit to left to move Bruner to second. Janes sealed NMHU's fate with a single down the right field line, easily plating Bruner with the game-winning run.
Harris earned the win, pitching one inning of scoreless relief. Haubert surrendered nine hits and seven earned runs in her no-decision.
Game two was all Highlands. Martinez set the tone early, striking out the side in two of the first three innings. A five-run third was all the offense the Cowgirls would need, as they strung together five hits. A two-run homer by Kristy Partridge and an error by Skyhawk right fielder
Destinee DeHerrera that allowed a pair of runs to score did most of the damage.
A two-run shot off the bat of NMHU's Natasha Reyes in the top of the sixth added insurance and forced Harris (2-5) out of the game.
Stephanie Janes pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The only offense FLC could generate was an RBI single by Bolyard in the second, scoring Bruner, who had walked, stole second and reached third on a passed ball. The only other FLC hit was an infield single by
Erica Conley in the bottom of the fifth.
The Skyhawks hit the road next weekend for a four-game set at Chadron State (7-13 overall, 6-9 RMAC). Games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.
