Skyhawks remain in Denver to face Converse Wednesday

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. — Regis (5-1 overall, 2-0 in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) struggled early with Fort Lewis (3-5, 2-1) before outscoring the Skyhawks 9-2 in the second half en route to a 15-5 victory yesterday at Regis.

“Regis is a good team,” said first-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “They definitely connected in the midfield. We just didn't come off the bus, I guess.”

Ally Kvidera gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead when she scored on a free position shot 3:38 into the game. The lead was short-lived, however, when the Rangers' Morgan Taylor netted the equalizer off an assist by Danica Cutshall just 1:07 later.

The Rangers took the lead for good with 18:01 remaining in the first half when Jessika Carlstrom scored off a Taylor assist to make the score 2-1. An unassisted score by Erin Dybus with 14:48 left in the half stretched the lead to 3-1.

Fort Lewis twice trimmed Regis' lead to a single goal — first on an unassisted goal by Amanda Cawker with 12:36 left in the half to shave the margin to 3-2, and later on Kvidera's second free position shot of the game with 7:13 left in the first frame to cut the lead to 4-3 — but could get no closer. Regis ended the half with goals by Cutshall and Kelsi Goings to take a 6-3 advantage into halftime.

The second half was all Regis.

“We just couldn't score or attack and played very sloppily,” said MacDonald.

FLC managed just a pair of goals, one each from Kylie Smith with 12:42 remaining and from Cawker in the final minute.

Cutshall led the way for the Rangers with four goals and two assists. Dybus chipped in three goals, while Goings, Morgan and Carlstrom each scored twice.

Cawker and Kvidera each put up two markers for the Skyhawks, with Smith scoring once. FLC was credited with no assists on the game.

Chani Taggart (1-0) played the entire game in goal for the Rangers, allowing just five goals while making eight saves. The game was Taggart's first in goal during her four-year career.

Genna Waugh (3-4) played the first 39:48 in goal for the Skyhawks, surrendering eight goals while making nine saves. Shelby Wichkoski played the final 19:36, allowing seven goals while making four saves.

Regis outshot FLC 41-17 overall and 28-13 in shots-on-goal. The Rangers also had advantages in draw controls (14-8) and ground balls (11-10). The Skyhawks held a slight advantage in caused turnovers (20-18). Each team committed 21 turnovers.

Fort Lewis established a pair of new school single-game records in the game: most caused turnovers by a team (20; the previous record was 15 at Adams State on March 15, 2011) and most caused turnovers by an individual (five by Paige Juneau, tying a record held by two others).

The Skyhawks next face Converse (1-10 overall) at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Regis. FLC opens its home slate against Regis at 1 p.m. Friday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
