Fort Lewis defeats Converse 19-15 in neutral-site lacrosse game

Smith scores seven goals to propel Skyhawks to season’s fourth win

Box Score

DENVER, Colo. — Fort Lewis (4-5 overall) jumped out to a 13-5 halftime lead en route to a 19-15 win over Converse (2-12) today at the Regis Lacrosse Field.

“It was sloppy and we were definitely outplayed at points by Converse” said first-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “But we hung in there mentally and won.”

Kylie Smith was the offensive hero for the Skyhawks, scoring seven goals and adding an assist. She did much of her damage late in the game, scoring FLC's final four goals. Smith's seven-goal game marks the second most games by a single player in school history behind Abby Kvidera, who notched eight in a 23-2 win vs. Millsap earlier this year.

Strangely, it was the Valkyries, wrapping up a three-game tour of Colorado, who got out of the gate first. In the game's first nine minutes, the Skyhawks found themselves down 4-1 thanks to goals by Brooke Bondurant, Jennifer Tropiano, Lacey Bevilacqua and Brianna Hoffman.

“We come out slow in the beginning,” MacDonald admitted.

Then FLC caught fire, outscoring Converse 12-1 the final 20:54 of the first half.

Jessica Norby, last week's Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Offensive Player of the Week, added four goals and three assists for the Skyhawks. Ally Kvidera also had a hat trick, netting three goals and an assist. Whitney Wood scored twice for FLC.

Genna Waugh (4-4), the only goalkeeper in Skyhawk lacrosse history to earn a victory in goal, played the first half and allowed five goals while making six saves. Shelby Wichkoski played the final 30 minutes, surrendering 10 goals while making eight saves.

Hoffman was the offensive star for the Valkyries, with six goals. Bondurant added a pair of markers and one assist.

Tabitha Chamblee played 54:04 in goal, allowing 15 goals while stopping four FLC shots. Madison Noland played 5:56, surrendering four goals while making one save.

The Valkyries outshot FLC 39-29.

Fort Lewis opens its home slate against Regis (6-1 overall, 2-0 WILA) at 1 p.m. Friday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
