WORCESTER, Mass. —
Assumption (1-0 overall) defeated Fort Lewis (0-2) 13-10 today in women's lacrosse at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The game was the Skyhawks' second in a six-day, four-game trek through New England.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Steph O'Rourke, Mary Guinee and Michelle Santos in the first three minutes.

After a timeout by first-year Fort Lewis head coach Kelsey MacDonald, the Skyhawks answered with the first of three goals by Abby Kvidera with 25:23 left in the first half.

“Right after that we picked it up and started playing,” said MacDonald. “We just couldn't get over the hump.”

Fort Lewis trimmed the Greyhound lead to a single goal on four occasions: 4-3 and 6-5 in the first half, and 7-6 and 8-7 in the second. The Skyhawks could never score the equalizer, however.

“In the last two minutes, we kept winning the ball back and scored two quick goals,” said MacDonald. “If there had been three more minutes, we could have won.”

Abby Kvidera finished with three goals on three shots and was one of two FLC players to record a hat trick; Amanda Cawker also netted three goals. Ally Kvidera scored two goals for FLC, while Toki Tajima-Prodnuk and Kylie Smith also tallied. Jessica Norby had two assists while Nicole Krook had one helper.

“We played well, but made some sloppy mistakes in the midfield,” said MacDonald. “The girls played their hearts out.”

She singled out the play of Jessica Adams, who drew two yellow cards during the match after winning balls on the defensive end.

“Jess Adams played really well on defense,” said MacDonald, adding that Adams and Krook worked well together on defense and through the midfield.

Shelby Wichkoski started in goal, allowing seven goals while making seven saves in the first 30 minutes. Genna Waugh allowed six goals while stopping nine Assumption shots in the second stanza.

O'Rourke and Santos scored three goals each for the Greyhounds. Michelle Monahan played all 60 minutes in net for Assumption, making four saves to earn her first victory of the year.

Fort Lewis continues its road trip at 1 p.m. (EST) Thursday at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester. Like Assumption, the Penmen are members of the Northeast-10 Conference — a hotbed of NCAA Division II lacrosse.
