DURANGO, Colo. — Regis (7-1 overall, 3-0 in the
Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) raced out of the starting gate to a 12-2 halftime lead en route to a 21-7 win over Fort Lewis (4-6, 2-2) today at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
Erin Dybus scored four times while Kelsey O'Connor and Carly Wagner each notched hat tricks as the Rangers — competing in their 11th season of intercollegiate women's lacrosse — continued their domination of the third-year Skyhawks. The Rangers are now 6-0 overall against FLC, having swept the season series all three years.
“Regis is a good program,” said first-year FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald. “They have strong, talented, tall athletes who are well disciplined. I think that intimidated us a little bit and we didn't come out to play. We played like freshmen today.”
Ally Kvidera had a big game for the Skyhawks, scoring four goals on just five shots.
“Ally was awesome today,” said MacDonald. “She has the fire and will to score, especially in big games.”
Abby Kvidera added two goals for the Skyhawks, while
Kylie Smith scored once.
Jessica Norby had one assist for FLC.
Paige Juneau led the 'Hawk defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Regis also had multi-goal games from Kelsi Goings (two goals, two assists), Cristina Johnson (two goals, one assist), Morgan Taylor (two goals, one assist) and Halie Wilbanks (two goals).
Regis' Erin Lewis (5-1) played all 60 minutes in goal and made five saves.
Fort Lewis again used two goalkeepers, with
Genna Waugh (4-5) playing the first 30 minutes and allowed 12 goals while making five saves.
Shelby Wichkoski played the entire second half in relief of Waugh, making one save while allowing nine goals.
Genna Waugh (4-4), the only goalkeeper in Skyhawk lacrosse history to earn a victory in goal, played the first half and allowed five goals while making six saves.
Shelby Wichkoski played the final 30 minutes, surrendering 10 goals while making eight saves.
The Rangers outshot Fort Lewis 35-20 in the game, 27-12 in shots on goal.
With the victory, the Rangers improved their position to win the inaugural WILA women's championship. Regis swept the second place Skyhawks and have three league games remaining, all against the lower half of the WILA standings — two against Adams State and one against Mesa State.
Fort Lewis continues its three-game home stand when it hosts Mesa State (2-6 overall, 1-2 WILA) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Ray Dennison Memorial Field. FLC won the inaugural meeting between the two clubs 16-15 in Grand Junction on March 23.
