ALAMOSA, Colo. – For Fort Lewis College head coach Kira Zeiter, Saturday's doubleheader was extra special. The first-year Skyhawk skipper spent the previous seven seasons at Adams State College, where she played from 2004-07 and spent the next three years as assistant coach.

Zeiter's homecoming today was a sweet one, with her Skyhawks (11-20 overall, 10-16 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) defeating Adams State (23-20, 15-15) 11-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Grizzlies won the nightcap 9-1.

In the opener, Cierra Walters led off with a triple and Kayla Bruner hit a two-run double as part of a five-run first inning that gave FLC all the runs they would need. Bruner finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in. Joanna Young, who also smacked a two-round double in the first inning, also went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Kassie Haubert (9-8) allowed four runs (three earned) on ten hits while striking out five Grizzlies.

Sarah Lindquist (15-9) surrendered 11 runs on 12 hits, but was victimized by two errors which led to five unearned runs.

“In the first game, we played really well as a team,” said Zeiter. “We came out on fire offensively and put a nice first five runs on the board. We continued a steady rest of the game with Kassie on the mound.”

Unfortunately, as they've done numerous times this year, the Skyhawks struggled to build on their first-game success. The 9-1 loss in game two marked the fifth time this year that FLC dropped the back end of a twin bill after winning the opener.

“The focus for the rest of the season is to take the mentality of game one into game two,” said Zeiter.

The Grizzlies tagged Skyhawk pitchers Alyse Harris (2-9), when went just 1.2 innings, and Haubert for 12 hits and nine runs in a game shortened to six innings due to the eight-run rule. Carly Delorenzo went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI, while Kristen Payne and Jaycee Lovato each belted their 11th home runs of the year.

Rachel Lovato (5-6) allowed nine hits and just one run – a solo home run by Chelsea Rodriguez (her sixth of the season).

Rodriguez was 2-for-4 in the second game, while Bruner went 2-for-3.

The teams meet again Sunday for a second doubleheader, with games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the ASC Softball Field.
