ALAMOSA, Colo. — A walk-off grand slam by Kristen Payne in the first game and a walk-off homer for Jaycee Lovato — her second in as many days — in the second game helped Adams State sweep a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader from Fort Lewis at the ASC Softball Field on Sunday.

Payne's grand slam during the first game highlighted the Grizzlies' (25-20 overall, 17-15 RMAC) 11-1 win in the opener. She added a two-run shot in the sixth inning of the nightcap, sparking a back-to-back-to-back home run show that ended the second game 13-5. Stephanie Dunham and Lovato followed suit with solo jacks.

“It was a tough day for us,” said first-year FLC skipper Kira Zeiter. “We have to keep working hard every single day and improve on the consistency in our batting.”

The day started quickly for the Grizzlies as Katelyn Lovato hit the second pitch she saw up the middle for a single before Carly DeLorenzo hit the very first pitch she saw for a triple to left center. She would score two batters later on a wild pitch to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Sarah Lindquist did not allow a single hit until the top of the fourth when Fort Lewis (11-22,
10-18) was able to string two hits together and crack the scoreboard.

No other runs were scored until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Grizzlies were able to throw up a nine spot.

Lindquist, who only allowed the one run on three hits and two walks, got her 16th win of the season.

Kassie Haubert (9-9) gave up 11 hits and 11 runs in 5.2 innings of work to take the loss.

Fort Lewis cracked the scoreboard first in the second game when Cierra Walters led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a suicide squeeze by Chelsea Rodriguez. The lead was short-lived, though, as the Grizzlies squeezed out two runs in their half of the inning. ASC added a third run in the second inning.

Fort Lewis' Kayla Bruner tied the game at 3-3 in the third when she smacked her 10th round tripper of the season, but the Grizzlies again answered with a run in their half of the frame to reclaim the lead 4-3.

A leadoff single by Kamali'i Peneku was followed by a two-run blast by Destinee DeHerrera — her second of the year — to give FLC a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth. DeHerrera's pyrotechnics chased ASC starter Rachel Lovato, who had a no-decision in four innings of work, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks.

The Grizzlies put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth, belting six hits including three of the extra-base variety. Jaycee Lovato provided most of the damage with a three-run homer to center.

In the sixth inning with two outs, Schossow doubled to center to set up the back-to-back-to-back long balls that ended the game.

Lindquist (17-9) worked two innings of shutout, one-hit ball to pick up her league-leading 17th win of the year.

Alyse Harris (2-10) went 5.1 innings in the nightcap for FLC, allowing nine runs and 12 hits. Stephanie Janes retired one batter in relief, but surrendered four runs on four hits, including the trio of long balls.

Rodriguez, who went 2-for-2 in the nightcap, was the only Skyhawk to record multiple hits in the game.

The Skyhawks travel to Western New Mexico (20-26, 16-14) later this week for its final road trip of the season. Games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday.
