SILVER CITY, N.M. — The Western New Mexico softball team (22-26 overall, 18-14 in the
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) swept a pair of games from Fort Lewis (11-24, 10-20) yesterday at Mustang Field, winning 5-1 and 15-5.
Western New Mexico's Sarah Byrne crushed four home runs on the day, going 2-for-3 in the opener with a pair of solo round trippers and 3-for-4 with six RBI and two homers in the nightcap, including a walk-off grand slam that ended the contest early due to the eight-run rule. She also pitched in game two, striking out three Skyhawks while improving her record to 2-2.
FLC's
Kassie Haubert (9-10) pitched five strong innings in the opener, striking out five before surrendering three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Destinee DeHerrera and
Chelsea Rodriguez each had two hits in game one.
Alyse Harris (2-10) went three innings in game two, allowing seven runs and eight hits while striking out two. Haubert relieved her in the final 2.2 innings, but fared no better, allowing eight runs on seven hits.
Kayla Bruner, who is now batting .439, went 2-for-2 in the second game and led off the top of the sixth with her team-high 11th home run of the season.
The Skyhawks fell to 2-10 in the month of April.
The two teams conclude their four-game set with games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. today.
